The Science Behind the Smell

How ozone chemistry and scent diffusion work together to transform commercial spaces

Odour control isn't just about masking bad smells—it's about understanding the chemistry of how odours form and how to eliminate them at the molecular level. Scentific's technology combines two powerful approaches: ozone destruction and premium scent diffusion.

    Understanding Ozone (O₃)

    What Is Ozone?

Ozone (O₃) is a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms. Regular oxygen—the kind we breathe—has two oxygen atoms (O₂). That third oxygen atom makes ozone highly reactive and unstable.

In nature, ozone forms in the upper atmosphere when UV light from the sun splits O₂ molecules, allowing the individual oxygen atoms to combine with other O₂ molecules to form O₃. This "ozone layer" protects life on Earth from harmful UV radiation.

    How Ozone Eliminates Odours

Most odours come from organic compounds—molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, and other elements. These compounds are often volatile, meaning they easily evaporate and reach our noses.

When ozone encounters these odour-causing molecules, its extra oxygen atom breaks away and attacks the molecular structure. This process is called oxidation.

Oxidation destroys the chemical bonds that give the molecule its smell. The odour compound is broken down into simpler, odourless substances like carbon dioxide and water. The ozone molecule itself reverts back to regular oxygen (O₂) after losing its extra atom.

    The Oxidation Process

    1. 1. Ozone (O₃) comes into contact with an odour molecule
    2. 2. The unstable third oxygen atom breaks away from the ozone molecule
    3. 3. This oxygen atom attacks and disrupts the chemical structure of the odour molecule
    4. 4. The odour molecule is broken down into harmless, odourless byproducts
    5. 5. The remaining oxygen reverts to O₂, which we safely breathe

    Why Ozone Is So Effective

Unlike air fresheners or ventilation systems that merely mask or dilute odours, ozone chemically destroys the molecules responsible for the smell. This means:

    • Permanent elimination: The odour is gone, not just covered up
    • Broad spectrum: Ozone reacts with a wide range of organic compounds, making it effective against many different odour sources
    • No residue: After the reaction, only harmless oxygen remains

Corona Discharge: The Superior Ozone Generation Method

Not all ozone is created equal. There are two primary methods for generating ozone: UVC lamps and corona discharge. Scentific exclusively uses corona discharge technology—and for good reason.

UVC (ultraviolet) lamps generate ozone by exposing oxygen to ultraviolet light at a specific wavelength (185nm). While this method works, it has significant limitations:

    • Lower ozone output: UVC lamps produce relatively small amounts of ozone, limiting effectiveness
    • Lamp degradation: UVC lamps lose efficiency over time and require frequent replacement
    • Inconsistent output: Ozone production varies based on lamp age and operating conditions
    • Limited control: Difficult to precisely regulate ozone concentration

Corona discharge, by contrast, generates ozone by passing oxygen through a high-voltage electrical field. This creates a "corona" of electrical discharge that splits O₂ molecules, allowing them to recombine as O₃.

    Why Corona Discharge Is Better:

    • Higher ozone output: Produces significantly more ozone per unit of energy, making it far more effective for commercial applications
    • Consistent performance: Maintains stable ozone production over the life of the unit without degradation
    • Precise control: Allows for accurate regulation of ozone concentration based on real-time conditions
    • Long lifespan: No bulbs to replace—corona discharge generators are built for continuous commercial operation
    • Energy efficient: Converts electrical energy to ozone more efficiently than UVC methods

For commercial spaces dealing with persistent, heavy-duty odour challenges, corona discharge technology provides the power, reliability, and control needed to truly eliminate odours—not just reduce them.

    Safety First: Ozone Management

While ozone is highly effective at destroying odours, it must be managed carefully. High concentrations of ozone can irritate the respiratory system.

This is why safety is built into our design:

    • Proximity sensors: Our systems detect when people are nearby and automatically stop ozone generation
    • Short half-life: Ozone naturally breaks down back into O₂ within 20-30 minutes, meaning it doesn't linger
    • Controlled release: Our systems release ozone only in designated areas (like bin rooms) when unoccupied

    The OzoneFusion™ Two-Stage System

Our innovative approach combines molecular destruction with premium fragrance diffusion

    1

    Ozone Destruction

Corona discharge generates O₃ molecules that chemically destroy odour compounds through oxidation

    Targets VOCs and organic compounds
    Breaks molecular bonds permanently
    Proximity sensors ensure safety
    Converts back to O₂ naturally
    2

    Premium Scent Diffusion

High-end fragrance oils are diffused through dedicated lines to create a welcoming atmosphere

    Professional-grade fragrances
    Direct line into garbage chutes
    Prevents odours travelling upward
    Consistent, long-lasting results

    Stage 1: Ozone Destruction

Ozone is released into the bin room or waste area, where it chemically destroys odour molecules through oxidation. This eliminates the source of the smell at the molecular level.

    Stage 2: Premium Scent Diffusion

Once odours are eliminated, our system diffuses a carefully curated premium fragrance, creating a pleasant and professional atmosphere.

This two-stage approach ensures not only that bad smells are gone, but that your commercial space smells fresh, clean, and inviting.

    Why Traditional Solutions Fall Short

    Air Fresheners & Sprays

These products mask odours by adding a stronger scent on top. The odour molecules are still present—you just can't smell them as much. The effect is temporary and often creates a "mixed" smell that's worse than the original.

    Ventilation & Exhaust Fans

Ventilation systems dilute odours by moving air out and bringing fresh air in. While helpful, they don't eliminate the odour source. As soon as ventilation stops, the smell returns. They're also energy-intensive and can spread odours to other areas.

    Manual Cleaning & Disinfectants

Regular cleaning addresses the physical source (like waste residue), but it's labor-intensive, costly, and often insufficient for persistent odours. Disinfectants kill bacteria but don't neutralize the odour molecules already in the air.

    Passive Odour Absorbers

Products like activated charcoal or baking soda absorb some odour molecules, but they have limited capacity and require frequent replacement. They're not suitable for large commercial spaces with continuous odour production.

Scentific's ozone-based technology is the only method that truly destroys odours at the molecular level.
